FDI Project 2022 - Differentiability of Digital Printing Services

In the online seminar of the Fachverband Druck und Informationsverarbeitung (FDI), Michael Bromberger (Digitaldruck Institut) discussed the differentiability of digital printing services. "The problem in digital printing is not the technology or the material, it is the sensible and application-oriented use in a targeted combination," explained the speaker.

Finding the right system for the application in question
With digital printing, technological diversity also entered the printing industry. Copying machines became high-performance technology based on dry toner for digital sheetfed printing. Inkjet printers became high-speed inkjet web presses. And beyond that, more and more technologies have been developed that are almost impossible to classify in terms of their diversity. What they have in common is that they put ink on paper. For the print buyer, this means that he actually has to study all the systems to make sure that the respective technology fits his requirements.
In practice, however, things are usually different. Most customers rely on their respective service providers, and the real selection criterion is ultimately "price". The result is that very often the most suitable technology is not used in the respective application, but simply the one that is available at the moment.

According to Bromberger, there is currently no institution that deals intensively with such topics. The FDI's initiative comes at just the right time. This initiative, which Michael Bromberger is developing on behalf of and in cooperation with the FDI, is intended to qualify digital printing service providers in order to create the necessary transparency and differentiation in digital printing. Essentially, it is about an application-related certification of printing services, which should lead to a simple selection of the right printing company for the required print product.

But this has advantages not only for print buyers. Digital press manufacturers can also look forward to a more sensible and profitable use of their technology. The print service provider himself can expect serious competition in which he can differentiate himself primarily through quality and fair prices.
And even paper suppliers can profit from this differentiation initiative, since for sufficient transparency, of course, horse and rider must also be named for the substrates.
So the effort will not only be worthwhile for the association. For some time now they have been working on the realization of this project, which can also give victims of the pandemic a jump-start on a new future.
